The Annual Survey of Education 2012
The Annual Survey of Education 2012 by Pratham, an NGO focused on primary education, has caused quite a stir in the education circles in India. The report says that 46% of Std V students can’t solve simple calculations among other things.
The report is in sync with the Programme For International Students Assessment (PISA) which ranks India as 73 among 74 countries in a study of maths, science and reading.
US President Barack Obama had warned that America's dipping proficiency in mathematics was putting it at a disadvantage with India and China, but Indian policy planners need to worry too. In 2010, 29.1% children in Class V could not solve a two-digit subtraction problem without seeking help. This proportion increased to 39% in 2011 and 46.5% in 2012.
Ironically, 2012 was the 'year of mathematics'.
How much time would your child take to multiply?
999999999999999 X 235967859262348
213158648 ÷ 99
Would you like your child to multiply with in 30 seconds with out any aid?
Then the answer is - "Vedic Maths"
The science lost due to the advent of modern mathematics and Britishers. Vedic mathematics - a gift given to this world by the ancient sages of India. A system which is far more simple and enjoyable than modern mathematics.Research shows that the application of Vedic mathematics makes use of both parts of the brain.
Vedic Mathematics is the name given to the ancient system of Mathematics which was rediscovered from the Vedas between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji (1884-1960). According to his research all of mathematics is based on sixteen Sutras or word-formulae which he claimed he had based on a lost appendix of Atharvaveda, an ancient text of the Indian teachings called Veda. For example, 'Vertically and Crosswise` is one of these Sutras. These formulae describe the way the mind naturally works and are therefore a great help in directing the student to the appropriate method of solution.
It has some similarities to the Trachtenberg system in that it speeds up some arithmetic calculations. It claims to have applications to more advanced mathematics, such as calculus and linear algebra. The system was first published in the book Vedic Mathematics in 1965. The system has since been developed further and there have been several other books released.
In the Vedic system 'difficult' problems or huge sums can often be solved immediately by the Vedic method. These striking and beautiful methods are just a part of a complete system of mathematics which is far more systematic than the modern 'system'. Vedic Mathematics manifests the coherent and unified structure of mathematics and the methods are complementary, direct and easy.
The Vedic Mathematics Sutras. This list of sutras is taken from the book Vedic Mathematics, which includes a full list of the sixteen Sutras and in Sanskrit, but in some cases a translation of the Sanskrit is not given in the text and comes from elsewhere.
Try this calculation without using pen or paper. Find the time u take to solve.......
Now try the above calculation with the following method,
A quick way to square numbers that ends with 5 using the formula BY ONE MORE THAN THE ONE BEFORE.
852 = 7225, 752 means 85 x 85. The answer is in two parts: 72 and 25. The last part is always 25. The first part is the first number, 8, multiplied by the number "one more", which is 9: so 8 x 9 = 72.
